Taiko!

Last night I went to a Taiko show at the Kabuki theater in San Francisco. The MC for the night used a few adjectives like 'thrilling' to introduce the performances, which of course induced a lot of smirking and eye-rolling among my party. However, it turns out that 'thrilling' was a perfect word for this.

This is from 1994, apparently, but it gives you a good impression of what goes on during the SF Taiko Dojo's signature finale.

My roommate's rack

my roommate has a great rack.

here's part of a photo taken by her then-boyfriend at burningman 2007 when she's wearing the 'sexy pharmacist' outfit.

despite the obvious disadvantages of basically being ignored by dudes whenever i'm out with my roommate, the rack has benefited me many a night. it garners free drinks for me. it gets me into clubs without waiting in line. sometimes it gets me free food.

last night, however, it gave me the greatest gift of all: backstage passes to the post-show meet and greet at the chris rock No Apologies tour show in oakland. here's how it went down: we arrived at the paramount and my roommate wanted to get a couple of drinks. i was nursing a hangover, so i declined, but she got two cups of wine anyway. at first we thought that we couldn't go into the theater with a beverage, so she started chugging the first cup. eventually we realized that there was no such restriction, so we went in. she finished the second cup during the opening act, mario joyner. she got a third cup during intermission, so nature inevitably called during chris rock's performance (which was fantastic, btw). on her way back from the restroom, the rack made its move. a nice man in a suit was the casualty, who happened to be the opening act. i was enjoying the show inside so i can't give you a play-by-play, but my roommate slid back into her seat clutching a pair of backstage passes.

chris rock is one of my heroes. i think his timing and delivery are incredible. and last night i shook his hand and told him that i love his work. yes, i did say 'your work.' i realize that it sounds like maybe he does leukemia research or finances human rights projects instead of make fat jokes (freebasing gravy?), but he really is a wonderful comedian.

so, Ms. Rack, i thank you. keep up the good work!
